CANTON -- Town assessor Steve Teele will officially resign effective Aug. 31, but has agreed to stay on part-time while the town board mulls how to fill the six-year appointment once he is gone.

Teele is leaving due to retirement, although the term of the office concludes in September 2019.

The town board accepted his letter of resignation at their meeting in July.

“With appreciation,” said Supervisor Mary Ann Ashley, “Thirteen years is a long time.”

Teele also works for two other municipalities as an assessor, Ashley said.

After Aug. 31, Teele will work as a part-time assessor, for up to 15 hours a week, at $40 per hour.

Ashley said the board appreciated Teele’s “gracious” offer to stay on part-time as it would allow them to consider their options and determine how best to fill the position.

“We want to take our time and do it right as far as the search,” said the supervisor.

“In my view we have to have a full-time position. It’s a critical job,” Ashley said. “We don’t want to rush into anything.”
