CANTON – The town board has appointed Cindy Brand of Massena as the new town assessor.
Brand, a former assessor for several years for the town of Horseheads south of Ithaca in Chemung County, will take over from retired town assessor Steve Teele on March 1.
Teele retired last September after 13 years with the town, but agreed to stay on as an interim assessor until the board could find someone to take over the position.
Town Supervisor Mary Ann Ashley said Brand is qualified and has met the state standards required for assessors.
Teele will stay on for a couple of weeks after March 1 to ease the transition.
Brand’s salary is $42,000 a year.
She will serve as assessor on a probationary basis until August when she will be evaluated and more than likely appointed to a full 6-year term in September. The term length for the position is set by the state, Ashley said.
