WADDINGTON -- A Madrid-Waddington Central School bus went off the road this morning on County Route 31 due to icy roads, but no one was injured in the incident.
Superintendent Eric Burke said the bus went partially off road on County Route 31 after a student pickup near a sharp curve. He said the back end of the bus slid around and the bus could not get traction. He said the incident occured in a slow manner.
The school dispatched salters and sanders to help get the bus back in motion and called the rescue squad to aid with traffic control.
Burke said a second vehicle went off the road due to the bus being across the roadway, but by that time flaggers were already in place. Burke said those on scene reported the truck was going too fast, but there was no collision between the vehicles.
“We were very lucky. We had a good bus driver who did the right things and the kids handled it very well,” he said.
Burke said the school followed its regular protocol and that the radar looked good this morning, but some spots were much more icy than others. Burke said the elementary buses were delayed three hours following the incident, but said road conditions should be fair at this point.
