POTSDAM -- A broken utility pole knocked out power in the Village of Potsdam for approximately 30 minutes this morning.
St. Lawrence County Emergency Services said the outage was caused by a broken utility pole on Market Street near the Hampton Inn, but no accident was reported.
Power went out to the north side of the village at about 7:30 a.m., and was restored about half an hour later.
At least three National Grid bucket trucks and other vehicles from the power company, a cable truck, and Potsdam police and fire personnel and vehicles blocked traffic along Market Street from Grove Street to May Road to allow workers to repair the pole without endangering workers or drivers.
National Grid Supervisor Gordie Akins said a guy wire on the pole broke, and then the pole snapped, about three-quartres of the way up.
No no one would offer a guess as to how the guy wire snapped.
The pole is next to a driveway to the work site of the new Hampton Inn.
Officials were working to determine the cause.
Potsdam fire trucks were seen responding to the scene as well as trucks from the power company.
Traffic lights were also knocked out during the outage. Power was restored at about 8:07 a.m.
