OGDENSBURG -- Breathing problems and falls were the most common calls the Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad fielded in 2014, according to their year-end report.

Of the 2,602 calls they took that year, 276 complained of respiratory ailments and 258 had fallen, the report says. They also treated 175 people for chest pain, 173 for unspecified pain, 144 traffic accidents and 107 for abdominal pain.

In addition to that, they answered to 90 calls where someone had fainted or was unconscious, 76 for “altered mental status,” 75 seizures, 57 strokes, 54 traumatic injuries, 50 hemmorhages or lacerations, 49 with diabetic problems, 39 with back pain, 32 for poisoning, 24 assaults, 22 in cardiac arrest, 19 allergic reactions, seven choking, six animal bites, two for drowning and one burn victim, according to the report.

The OVRS says they also took “other miscellaneous calls for service.”

The squad’s report says they arrived on scene to calls in the 13669 zipcode in 4 minutes, 30 seconds. Calls to their entire service area saw an average 5 minutes, 10 seconds response time, the squad’s report says.

They said their call numbers totaled 1,871 in the City of Ogdensburg, 315 in the Town of Oswegatchie, 115 in the Town of Lisbon, 97 in the Village of Heuvelton, 64 in the Town of Morristown, 48 in the Town of Waddington, 15 in the Town of Hammond and 14 in the Town of DePeyster. They also answered calls in the towns of Macomb, Russell, Hermon, Gouverneur, DeKalb, Madrid, Massena and Rossie and the Village of Rensselaer Falls, the report says.
