MASSENA -- A Brasher Falls man is facing a felony after allegedly being caught trying to ship psychedelic mushrooms to a person in Arizona.

David J. Johnson, 42, of 1015 Maple Ridge Road is charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony.

According to court documents, Johnson was charged after he dropped a package allegedly containing five grams of mushrooms to be sent via UPS at the Ship-It Shop, Main Street.

Store employees told police they noticed the contents of his package were rattling around, so they opened it to stuff it with packaging peanuts.

Court documents say they noticed the parcel contained a peanut butter jar that appeared to have been opened, and he was concerned it might leak.

One of them opened the jar and noticed the peanut butter had been swirled around and he and later reported it to their boss as suspicious, who called village police.

Officers arrived with a K9 who alerted on the box, court documents state.

A warrant was later issued for Johnson’s arrest. He was collared at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 28 on Willow Street, police said.
