Two St. Lawrence County school districts are receiving funds to assist with the educational costs of students taken in during the school year after being displaced by natural disasters.

The state Education Department is sending $2,250 to the Brasher Falls Central School District for one displaced student there, and $4,750 to Gouverneur Central for two students enrolled there in the 2017-18 school year, according to state Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia.

The Education Department allotted $15.9 million grants to 185 school districts under this program of aid to districts serving students displaced by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Maria and the 2017 California wildfires.

Examples of allowable expenses for helping students include paying for personnel; curricular material and classroom supplies; tutoring, mentoring, or academic counseling; reasonable transportation costs; health and counseling services; and support services.
