MASSENA -- The towns of Brasher and Louisville recently passed motions supporting Massena transferring Massena Memorial Hospital's assets to St. Lawrence Health System.
Each board passed the resolutions at respective meetings on Wednesday, Oct. 9.
Brasher's resolution cites St. Lawrence Health System's "vast experience running rural hospitals," their pledge to spend up to $8 million on MMH after they've taken it over, and the potential for jobs to be lost if MMH doesn't get a cash influx.
The transfer of MMH's assets is subject to a referendum in the Town of Massena on Election Day, Nov. 5.
Massena Memorial is slated to receive a $20 million grant from New York state, contingent upon SLHS creating an entirely new non-profit entity to run MMH, similar to how SLHS operates Canton-Potsdam and Gouverneur hospitals.
Under the deal, St. Lawrence Health System will assume the long-term debts and liabilities currently held by MMH. That will be paid off out of the $20 million grant.
Councilor Sam Carbone at the Wednesday, Oct. 16 Massena Town Council meeting said the St. Lawrence County Democratic Committee has also passed a resolution supporting the transfer of MMH assets to SLHS.
