BOCES program in Massena one of 8 demonstration sites in U.S. for new educational ideas, occupational opportunities

Posted

St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES is one of eight demonstration sites in the country charged with developing transition programs of educational and occupational opportunities for low-skilled adults and released prisoners.

The Points of Entry Project, funded by the Open Society Foundation’s Special Fund for Poverty Alleviation, is aimed at adults with a sixth- to eighth-grade skills and prisoners with sixth-to 12th-grade skills re-entering society.

Eight demonstration sites were chosen by the U.S. Department of Education. SLLBOCES and the other sites in Alabama, California, Massachusetts and New York will receive customized technical assistance to identify, develop, and implement approaches to strengthen or expand on current ideas.

Key goals of the program include creation of career and education pathways, improved behavioral change and personal growth services, and that successful approaches get the attention they deserve and are sustained.

The program is offered at the Adult and Continuing Education classrooms at the Massena office of the Department of Labor and the Massena Library, both on Glenn Street.
