Blizzard warning issued for St. Lawrence County as 12-20 inches of snow expected; travel warning issued, power outages possible

With today’s storm hitting most of New York State, including a blizzard warning for St. Lawrence County, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has declared a state of emergency for the entire state.

The blizzard warning is in effect from 7 a.m. today through 11 a.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The winter storm warning is no longer in effect.

“With heavy snow and dangerous conditions expected statewide, we are taking every precaution to keep New Yorkers safe, Gov. Cuomo said.

Snow accumulations could be up to a foot or 20 inches in some parts of the North Country with the heaviest snowfall rate of up to two inches expected this afternoon and evening, NWS says.

Heavy snow mixed with blowing and drifting snow from gusty winds will likely create dangerous “whiteout” driving conditions.

Winds will be 20 to 30 mph with gusts as high as 45 mph, the service says. Temps will be in the lower 20s throughout the day and around 5 to 15 degrees tonight.

Snow is expected to continue overnight and through the day on Wednesday before tapering off around 7 p.m., NWS says.

Travel is not recommended due to blizzard conditions this afternoon into Wednesday morning.

Isolated power outages are possible.

All residents should have the following items available:

• Flashlight and extra batteries.

• Battery-powered portable radio to receive emergency information.

• Adequate supplies of food, water, and any essential medications.

• First aid kit and supplies.

• Extra blankets and sleeping bags.

• Fire extinguisher and smoke detector – test to ensure they are working properly.

“We strongly urge everyone to limit unnecessary travel on Tuesday, and if you must ‎drive, please plan ahead, be careful, and stay safe,” Cuomo said in a press release
