Big second period propels Princeton over Saints, 5-1

Princeton took advantage of St. Lawrence University penalties in the second period, scoring three power play goals, two of them in the final two minutes of the period, skating to a 5-1 win over the Saints in a ECAC Hockey game at Hobey Baker Rink Saturday evening.

The Saints settle for a split of their weekend road series and are 3-8-3 overall and 3-4-0 in league play heading into a break for exams before finishing pre-holiday play with a home game against Vermont on Dec. 18. Princeton also split its weekend set and is 6-5-0 overall and 6-3-0 in league play.

The first period was the Robby Moss show as Princeton dominated play offensively and Moss did an outstanding job of keeping the Tigers off the board. The junior goaltender made 16 first period saves, a couple of them spectacular ones, and got a helping hand from defenseman George Hughes who plucked a rolling puck out of the blue just short of the goal line to prevent a Princeton goal midway through the period. Princeton outshot the Saints 16-5 with the Saints' limited to just two good scoring chances, one of which was a shot off the post by Greg Carey.

Princeton opened the scoring midway through the second period as senior defenseman Taylor Fedun sent freshman Andrew Ammon away with a step on the Saint defense. While Moss was able to stop Ammon's shot, the rebound went right to freshman Matt Farris, who hit the empty side of the net on the rebound at 9:09. The Tigers made it a 2-0 game just 1:26 later, converting on the power play as Eric Meland picked up a rebound off a Moss save at the post and tucked it in.

The Tiger power play clicked for two more goals late in the period as Saint penalties proved costly. Mike Kramer scored his fourth of the season right off the faceoff to start a power play at the 18:13 mark as the puck went post to post off a Moss save before Kramer put it back behind the Saint netminder and Farris was credited with his second of the period 41 seconds later when a centering pass hit the skate of a Saint defender and deflected past Moss.

"We lost our composure a little bit in the second period with the penalties and Princeton capitalized," said Saint coach Joe Marsh. "Princeton is a very good team and very solid defensively, and you can't give them the kind of chances we did and expect to come out unscathed."

The Saints got one back just 14 seconds into the third period when Kyle Flanagan retrieved a rebound of his own shot off a Princeton defenseman and put it past Bonar, but the Saints could not get any closer and Princeton iced the win with an empty net goal at 14:36 as Kramer picked up his second of the night.

"We played a better third period and I think we can take a lot of positives out of the weekend," Marsh added. "We will hit the books and take care of things academically and then we have a stretch of non-league games to keep working on getting better."

Joe Spadaccini played the third period for the Saints and turned in his second scoreless period of the season with 11 saves. Moss and Spadaccini combined for 42 saves in the game while Bonar finished with 18 stops for Princeton.
