OGDENSBURG -- BOCES will take bids on two modular homes built by students in their building trades program.
Each year, the Building Trades programs at Northwest Technical Center in Ogdensburg and Southwest Technical Center in Fowler complete a yearlong project to build modular homes, which they ultimately sell to community members.
“[This project] is work based learning at its best, as students receive not only the theory and academics associated with the trade but also they are able to apply it in a real setting that duplicates the workplace,” said Northwest Tech Instructor Jeff Swift, who has been in the program for 27 years.
BOCES officials say the building trades curriculum is based on industry standards as well as academic standards, so students are exposed to current trends and products used in the field today.
So far, between both tech centers, 35 modular homes have been built and sold to local families.
There is a $48,000 minimum bid the home.
They will be opened July 11 at 1 p.m. at the BOCES main office, 40 West Main St., Canton.
