A prolonged stretch of cold weather, with temperatures running 10 to 20 degrees below average, is expected to persist through early next week, according to the National Weather Service outlook for the North Country.

Today, there is a chance of brief moderate to heavy snowfall during the day, but no more than an inch is expected to accumulate. With the high temperature of about 12 and a 20 mph breeze from the west, wind chill values will be as low as minus 8.

The low will dip to about minus 4 tonight under cloudy skies, with wind chills as low as minus 17, and maybe lower if gusts of about 25 mph materialize. There is a slight chance of a little more snow.

Snowfall might be a little heavier on Thursday as another Arctic front will move eastward across the region. Snow and stiff breezes could make for hazardous travel conditions at about mid-day. Highs will reach about 20 Thursday and with wind gusts as high as 26 mph, wind chills could reach minus 19.

Tomorrow night, we could get another half-inch of snow. Lows will be around minus 5.
