Bear harvest in St. Lawrence County dropped to 90 in 2017 season, 13 taken in Hopkinton

Fewer bears were harvested in St. Lawrence County and also in the state’s Northern Zone in 2017 than in 2016, according to figures released March 7 by the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

The harvest in St. Lawrence County during the 2017 seasons was 90, down from 111 in 2016.

Statewide, hunters took 1,420 bears in 2017, down from the 1,539 reported for the 2016 seasons.

In the Northern Zone, hunters took an estimated 383 bears in 2017, about 25 percent fewer than the 514 in 2016 and well below the historical average.

Ninety bears were taken in St. Lawrence County, in 18 of the county’s 32 towns. That compares with 111 taken in 2016.

The take per town in 2017 was:

• Canton, 2

• Clare, 8

• Clifton, 7

• Colton, 9

• De Peyster, 3

• Edwards, 6

• Fine, 8

• Fowler, 5

• Gouverneur, 2

• Hermon, 2

• Hopkinton, 13

• Macomb, 1

• Parishville, 7

• Piercefield, 5

• Pierrepont, 2

• Pitcairn, 8

• Stockholm, 2.

In 2016, Fine was the town with the highest number of bears harvested, 17.

Countywide, 56 bears were taken by conventional means during the 2017 regular big-game season, 26 bears were taken during the early season, two with bows, six by muzzleloaders. None were taken in the youth hunting program.

The eighth-heaviest bear taken in the state in 2017 was in Hopkinton, with a dressed weight of 420 pounds. More bears, 13, were taken in Hopkinton than in other town in St. Lawrence County.
