CLARE -- An autopsy will be performed on the body of a 21-year-old SUNY Canton student who died while swimming with friends Sunday afternoon at Lampson Falls.
The body of Elliot D. Mullings of Brooklyn was found after a multi-agency search that began yesterday and concluded today shortly before noon when his body was found.
At 4:10 p.m. Sunday, Mullings was with two friends in the water at the base of the falls along the Grasse River near the hamlet of Clare when he was caught up in the swift current and high waters and was swept downstream, according to a statement from St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin Wells.
Attempts by his two friends and other onlookers to rescue Mullings were unsuccessful. A 911 call was placed by one of the people there a few minutes later.
St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, NYS DEC Forest Rangers and Forestry Personnel, NYS Police Helicopter and personnel, SUNY Police, members of the St. Lawrence County Underwater Recovery Team, Ogdensburg Police Department DIVE Team and members of numerous fire departments, rescue squads and other first responders and volunteers all worked on the search yesterday until it was too dark to continue, and resumed searching this morning, according to Sheriff Wells.
At about 11:25 a.m. today, divers found and recovered Mullings’ body.
St. Lawrence County Coroner June Wood was called to the scene.
St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s detectives said that their investigation continues.
