RENSSELAER FALLS -- A Rensselaer Falls man was found dead Aug. 26 at approximately 12:51 p.m. after state Police responded to a welfare check at 1341 County Route 15.

Troopers observed smoke coming from the second story of the residence, gained entry, but had to retreat due to excessive smoke.

After the fire was extinguished, Donald E. Tucker, 75, was found deceased in the second story kitchen area of the home. An investigation revealed that Tucker had spoken with relatives by phone earlier in the day and advised them that he had fallen. The relatives became concerned after not hearing back from Tucker, and notified St. Lawrence County 911.

St. Lawrence County Coroner Kevin Crosby responded and pronounced Tucker deceased at 3:32 p.m. Crosby authorized the body to be removed to Canton-Potsdam Hospital where an autopsy is scheduled.

The State Police were assisted by Heuvelton Fire, Canton Fire, Rensselaer Falls Fire, Ogdensburg Rescue, and the St. Lawrence County Fire Investigators.

State Police in conjunction with St. Lawrence County Fire Investigator Thomas Conklin are continuing the investigation.
