ROSSIE -- The death of a Gouverneur man following an ATV crash was ruled accidental, according to state police who are still investigating the incident.
John J. Washburn was killed Sept. 23 after he lost control of an ATV on a gravel road in the town of Rossie. State police say his vehicle struck a rock with the front right tire and became airborne, Washburn was thrown from the ATV striking his head on a rock.
Troopers say Wasburn was initially alert and responsive and was treated by Gouverneur Rescue, but lost consciousness and vital signs on the way to River Hospital.
Dr. Robert Werblin pronounced Washburn dead at 10:11 p.m. Jefferson County Coroner Dr. Samuel Livingstone ordered an autopsy to be conducted at Samaritan Hospital in Watertown.
Dr. Samuel Livingstone determined the cause of death to be subdural hematoma. The manner of death was ruled accidental.
