GOUVERNEUR – A fire in an apartment building on Austin Street Friday, April 28, at 4:16 p.m., was contained to a single, second floor residence, with minimal damage to the other apartments, reports the Gouverneur fire department on their Facebook page.
No injuries were reported in the fire, but friends of the family posted on the department Facebook page that two pets were lost, as well as much of the family’s possessions.
The North Country Chapter of the Red Cross based in Watertown issued a press release Saturday morning indicating they are providing assistance to the family involved, two adults and an 8-year-old child.
Volunteers from the organization supplied the family of three with food, shelter, clothing and comfort kits. The chapter stated that they would continue to assist those affected by the blaze.
On the department's Facebook page, residents one street over from the scene posted that they smelled smoke, and went to investigate. They saw smoke coming from an upstairs window from the apartment building, called 911 and notified the residents in the building of the fire.
The department said the blaze began in a bedroom, where it was eventually put out, but there was damage throughout the second floor residence.
The Gouverneur firefighters were assisted at the scene with a tanker crew from Richville.
Additional details were not available from the fire department Saturday morning.
