Aurelio Martinez and his Honduran band to play Afro-Caribbean-Indian music at June 18 Norwood Village Green concert

NORWOOD -- The Norwood Village Green Concert Series presents the Garifuna culture’s leading exponent, Aurelio Martinez, with his Honduran band, on Sunday, June 18, at 6 p.m.

Martinez performs Afro-Caribbean-Indian music of the Garifuna culture from coastal Honduras.

Singer-songwriter, guitarist and percussionist, Martinez is one of Central America’s most gifted performers. Born in Honduras, the artist is known for his powerful and evocative voice. He is the major tradition-bearer of the Garifuna culture and music and he is considered as the cultural ambassador of the Garifuna nation.

The Garifuna are people of Ameri-Indian and West African descent who live along the coasts of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

Aurelio grew up in a small Caribbean village called Plaplaya, surrounded by a family of talented musicians. His father was a well-known local troubadour who improvised Paranda songs containing Garifuna roots rhythms and Latin sounds. Following the influence of his uncles and grandfather, he became a brilliant drummer in his early childhood and learned to sing from his mother.

He has collaborated with the late Andy Palacio and Youssou N’Dour, a giant of Senegalese and African Music.

Aurelio’s extensive catalogue of recordings has achieved critical praise worldwide. His two latest recordings are “Landini” (The landing where the fishermen gathered) and “Durando.”

In January 2017, Aurelio launched his new album “Darandi,” a collection of Aurelio’s favorite songs from his career recorded to capture the sound of his incendiary live performances, accompanied by some of the Garifuna world’s brightest musical talents.

Aurelio can be seen on NPR’s Tiny Desk concert series and on his website: aureliomartinez.com
