In a squeaker, Republican John L. Byrne III is close to unseating incumbent Democrat Addie Jenne Russell for the 116th state Assembly District seat.
Byrne, a businessman and Cape Vincent town board member, received 13,580 votes, compared to 13,463 for Russell, who is seeking her fourth term.
The results are unofficial and do not include absentee ballots.
Conservative Party candidate Russ Finley, who raises beef cattle in Lisbon, and was the only candidate from St. Lawrence County, received 824 votes.
Russell, formerly an attorney at Conboy, McKay, Bachman & Kendall, served on the Jefferson County Board of Legislators from 2006 until becoming a member of the Assembly in 2009.
The 116th, called the “River District,” includes all St. Lawrence County towns along the St. Lawrence River (Massena, Ogdensburg, Louisville, Waddington, Lisbon, Oswegatchie, Morristown, and Hammond) plus the towns of Canton, Potsdam, Rossie, Macomb, and DePeyster, and northern Jefferson County not including Watertown.
