For the second time in two years, Democratic Assemblywoman Addie Russell has fought off a challenge from Republican John Byrne to retain the seat she first took in January 2009.
She received 22,107 votes, compared to 19,415 for Byrne, a Cape Vincent businessman who lost to Russell by 95 votes two years ago.
Russell, a Theresa lawyer, received 11,242 votes from St. Lawrence County voters and 10,865 in Jefferson County. Byrne garnered 9,662 from St. Lawrence County and 9,753 from Jefferson County.
The 116th “River District” includes all communities along the St. Lawrence Seaway in St. Lawrence and Jefferson counties, along with Potsdam and Canton.
Byrne faced a similar “squeaker” in this year’s Republican primary, when at the end of ballot counting on Primary Night, he trailed William Sheridan of Hammond by a handful of votes. But as absentee ballots came in, the votes of military members from Fort Drum in Jefferson County likely accounted for the margin of victory for the Cape Vincent Republican.
The results are unofficial and do not include absentee ballots.
