NORFOLK – With the recent redistricting of the state legislature, four people will be representing different sections of St. Lawrence County in the Assembly instead of the current two.

And that means some contenders for seats in that body will travel significant distances to meet county voters.

State Assembly candidate Joseph Chilelli of Herkimer will travel more than 150 miles – more than three hours by car – from home to appear at a meet-and-greet event from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 27 in the Hepburn Library of Norfolk.

Chilelli, a Democrat and former Herkimer County legislator, will be seeking citizen input and comments on local issues.

He is running in the 2012 election for New York State Assembly District 118. He is running unopposed in the Democratic primary Sept. 13. Incumbent Marc Butler is running unopposed in the Republican primary; he is also running on the Conservative Party and Independence Party tickets.

The new 118th District covers a swath up the middle of St. Lawrence County, including the towns of Fine, Clifton, Colton, Clare, Pierrepont, Parishville, Stockholm, Norfolk and Madrid, all of Fulton and Hamilton counties, most of Herkimer, and part of Oneida.

GOP voters in another Assembly district will be voting next Thursday in a primary contest to pick a candidate.

The 115th Assembly District includes all of Clinton and Essex counties and now also the eastern townships of St. Lawrence County, Brasher, Lawrence, Hopkinton and Piercefield.

Veteran Assemblywoman Janet Duprey, R-Peru, Duprey has two Republican challengers, Plattsburgh teacher Karen Bisso and David Kimmel, Cadyville businessman.

The Sept. 13 primary for state and local offices was moved from Tuesday, Sept. 11 by state lawmakers who cited the anniversary of the World Trade Center tragedy as reason for the change.
