Artists who have performed at Norwood Village Green get Grammy nods

NORWOOD -- Three past performers at the Norwood Village Green Concert Series were nominated for Grammy Awards Dec. 8, according to Village Green Concerts Series President and Program Director Joe Liotta.

The upcoming 2016 performances will include Grammy Award winners Tom Chapin and Jeremy Kittel, along with 2015 McArthur Genius Fellow, Michelle Dorrance.

The three nominees for 2016 Grammy’s who performed for the series previously were John Fedchock for best instrumental or vocal arrangement, Rob Ickes previously awarded, and now nominated for best bluegrass album, and Karrin Allyson for best vocal jazz recording. This is Allyson’s 5th nomination.

In the past, fifteen performers for the series were awarded the Grammy including Mamadou Diabate, Renée Flemming, Laurel Massé, James Cotton, Tim O’Brien, Joanne Shenandoah, Robert Ickes, Mike Auldridge, Casey Driessen, Laurie Lewis, Tom Rozan, Bill Harley, Susie Bogguss, Steve Riley, and Terrance Simien.

In 2016 the series will present three-time recipient Tom Chapin and Jeremy Kittel bringing the total of 17 Grammy Award recipients.

Additionally twelve other past performers were nominated previously including Rare Silk, Mark Murphy, Claire Lynch, Karrin Allyson, Andy Bey, Blue Highway, Peter Phippen, Grace Potter (with Kenny Chesney), Bill Morrissey, CJ Chenier, Della Mae and John Fedchock

Mark Murphy passed away in 2015 and the series notes his passing. Bill Morrissey was previously deceased.

The series will present the 2015 McArthur Genius Fellow Michelle Dorrance during its upcoming 43rd annual her tap-dancing skills and vision brings the art form to a new level of artistry while honoring its past. Dorrance and her company will perform Sunday, June 26, 2016. She is the second McArthur Genius Fellow to perform for the series, the first being Paul Taylor and his Taylor 2 dance company.

The series has had many other award recipients including a pair of National Medal of Arts recipients, two National Heritage Foundation recipients, a National Fiddle Champion, a National Dulcimer Champion, a Helen Hayes Performing Artist of the Year, 15 Juno recipients, 14 International Bluegrass Music Association winners, three Blues Foundation Awards recipients, and six Maple Blues awardees.

It also has award-winning recipients in a wide range of various other disciplines including a CMA best video award, a recipient of The Order of Canada, the winner of an Emmy award, 2 Guggenheim Fellowships, and The French Legion of Honneurs.

Many past performers have been called upon to use their musical talent to enhance films such as Dirk Powell and Tim O’Brien for Anthony Mingheller’s Cold Mountain, Steve Riley for Robert Duvall’s The Apostle, Ray Vega for Arne Glimcher’s The Mambo Kings and in 2010, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals for “White Rabbit” in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.
