Another group of parents and students from St. Lawrence County is headed to Albany tomorrow to buttonhole legislators and executive staff to push for more equitable state aid for schools.
People are apparently making travel plans on their own this time, but the Canton High School Parents Group, which has been taking the lead in the effort from the North Country, want people to join them as they try to present petitions to legislators.
The effort seems to be paying off: there is discussion and some action in both the Assembly and Senate to take $200 million that had been designated in Gov. Andrew Cuomo's budget plan as "challenge grant" money for schools and redirect it into non-competitive aid to school districts, such Canton's, that are facing potentially ruinous cuts to their budgets for next year.
While the governor's budget proposal does include more school aid this year after two years of deep cuts, some school districts feel the distribution of aid is unfair to rural and poorer districts.
One group of drivers plans to leave very early Wednesday.
People who would like to go, whether they have a car to help drive others or need a ride, may contact Relani Prudhomme at 854-1292 or witchwaidshigo@gmail.com.
Whether people can make the trip to Albany or not, the parents’ group continues to urge calls and emails to legislators and the governor’s office.
