Alternative heating sources can have risks, warn St. Lawrence County Insurance Professionals

In the heart of winter, many St. Lawrence County residents turn to alternative heating sources keep their homes warm.

But alternative heating sources can also increase the risk of fire and health problems, according to North Country Insurance Professionals, based in Waddington.

The use of pellet or woodstoves, space heaters and other alternative heating sources are a popular means to help keep your home warm. North Country Insurance Professionals offered the following safety tips:

• Pellet stove placement must allow for access to proper venting and electrical sources and must meet required clearances.

• Woodstoves and space heaters should be tested by Underwriters Laboratories (UL).

• Regular cleaning of fireplaces will keep them free of obstructions and creosote.

• Have your fireplace inspected annually by a professional chimney sweep.
