MASSENA -- All Winter Chill events in Louisville and Waddington will be canceled due to exceptionally warm weather, but Massena will still continue on.
What was supposed to be the capstone event, the St. Lawrence River Walleye Association’s Northern Pike Challenge, was previously canceled.
Event organizer Michael Ganger said the only events continuing despite the weather include the Massena Fire Department’s chicken barbecue at noon, a rock and skate at the Massena Arena from 7 to 9 p.m. and ‘License to Chill’ James Bond-themed menu at Amici’s Grill with live music from Big Poppa and Margarita Mike.
Gagner said the warm weather has made it impossible to hold some of the outdoor events and fireworks were canceled due to predicted high winds and rainy weather.
“It’s disappointing, but there isn’t much we can do at this point,” he said.
The National Weather Service says “record warm temperatures” and rain expected Saturday could cause minor to locally moderate flooding as the snow melts.
Temperatures on Saturday are expected to climb into the mid 60s.
“The greatest flood threat will occur concurrent with and after the heaviest rainfall, which is expected Saturday afternoon into Saturday night,” according to a notice from the NWS. “The flood threat will be enhanced on rivers with potential ice breakup, which includes the basins of far northeastern New York.”
NWS says flood watch means there is “a potential for flooding based on current forecasts.”
Sunday is forecast to be partly sunny with temperatures around freezing, with 30 percent chances of snow in the mountains.
