CANTON -- The Akwesasne Women Singers are among the honorees at TAUNY’s annual Salute to North Country Legends Sunday, Oct. 19.
Each year TAUNY recognizes legends who have mastered and conserved family, community, and regional arts or traditions, and are committed to preserving and passing them on to future generations.
In the 1980s, female members of the Swamp family first organized the Women’s Singing Society of Akwesasne, which has become an important cultural group for the Mohawk people. They are inspired to keep Mohawk language and traditions alive through song.
The 2014 North Country Heritage Award winners also include the Island Chapel Interdenominational Services in Upper Saranac Lake and the Polish American Citizens Club of Lewis County.
There will be an opportunity to learn more about all three honorees at TAUNY's celebration at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19 at The TAUNY Center in downtown Canton.
