AKWESASNE -- The Akwesasne Housing Authority will receive $600,000 in federal money to pay for a solar project at their housing complex.
The grant will pay for a solar farm at Sunrise Acres, with the excess power going to other housing authority properties, according to the AHA.
The authority’s grant application proposes building two solar farms, both off Blair Road in the so-called “Hogansburg Triangle” or “Bombay Triangle.”
The application proposes a system of either 350 kilowatts, 1,350 kilowatts or 5,000 kilwatts.
That could provide power to anywhere from 48 to 680 homes per year, the housing authority said.
The cash comes from the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Indian Community Development Block Grant Program.
Tribal leaders say the project will create jobs, in addition to bringing clean, low-cost energy to the territory.
