AKWESASNE -- A family of five who lost their home and all of their belongings in a fire last month are collecting donations through an online site to help them get back on their feet.

The fire occurred on Jan. 16 at 394 Frogtown Road.

"We are trying to raise money to enable them to cover cost of renting a place to stay and eventually maybe purchasing a second-hand mobile home to be able to go back to their property," Erica Barnes, mother of Allena Jacobs, said in an online statement.

As of Wednesday morning, $635 had been raised toward their goal of $3,000. To donate, visit https://www.giveforward.com/fundraiser/hcf7/allena-billy-and-children-s-fire-recovery-fund?utm_source=facebook.

The family includes Allena and Billy Jacobs and their three children.

The children range from 11 months to 16 years old.

The fire reportedly killed their two dogs and three cats. The family did not have insurance.

"The community has been so unbelievably generous with everything they have helped with clothing, supplies, words and acts of kindness. We are planning a fundraising dance at the American Legion in Hogansburg, Friday, Feb. 13," Barnes said.

"Please do not feel that your donation will be too small...even a dollar helps," she said.
