With temperatures hovering around 20 degrees, it’s been a long night for many of the more than 6,200 National Grid customers without power in St. Lawrence County.
And for some, power may not be back until Tuesday.
Major outages as of 6 a.m. included 597 in Canton, 734 in Colton, 573 in DeKalb, 770 in Fowler, 532 in Gouverneur, 310 in Hermon, 382 in Edwards, 112 in Macomb, 315 in Pierrepont, 401 in Pitcairn, 637 in Russell, 197, 92 in Fine, Rossie and 137 in Richville, according to National Grid.
Power is not expected to be restored until Tuesday in Canton, Russell, Rossie, Richville, Macomb, Hammond, Hermon, Gouverneur, Fine, Edwards, Clare and DeKalb, National Grid officials say. The rest of areas should have power back today, although the power company is still assessing conditions in Fowler, Clifton and Pitcairn.
The two-day ice storm, which began late Friday, dropped up to an inch of solid ice on St. Lawrence County, downing power lines and trees which fell on utility wires. Rain, freezing rain, sleet and a little bit of snow combined to create the hazard.
National Grid says it has mobilized 850 electric line and forestry workers to respond to the outages, the most since Ice Storm ’98. For more, view story at http://northcountrynow.com/news/respond-power-outages-downed-lines-national-grid-mobilizing-850-electric-line-forestry-workers-
