Due to the winter storm forecast, the Adirondack Park Agency has rescheduled a public hearing on the future of the St. Regis Fire Tower previously scheduled for March 12 to April 2.
The hearing will begin at 6 p.m. at APA headquarters in Ray Brook, between Saranac Lake and Lake Placid. The public is invited at 5 p.m. to review relevant documents. APA has also extended the period for written comments until April 16.
The St. Regis Mountain Fire Tower Historic Area is located on the summit of St. Regis Mountain in the Town of Santa Clara, Franklin County.
Some of the proposed management actions include:
• maintain the fire towers in a manner that complies with the State Historic Preservation Act
• make necessary structural improvements to the tower to allow for safe public access
• maximize the tower’s interpretive and educational potential.
The St. Regis Mountain fire tower, no longer in use, remains a popular hiking stop for people seeking good views of the landscape, but there have been proposals to take it down.
