CANTON – Nearly three-quarters of a million dollars is going toward a program to fight underage alcohol use in six St. Lawrence County school districts.
The funding of $760,000 to the Communities That Care Coalition group through the Seaway Prevention Council will help several communities in the county and their schools to tackle the higher-than-average problem of youth drinking in Colton-Pierrepont, Norwood-Norfolk, Lisbon, Massena, Morristown and Edwards-Knox central schools.
The specific goal is to reduce the number of students in the “30-day use” category, those who have reported alcohol use in the previous month, by working with students, parents, schools and other community resources in school districts with the highest rates.
Other school districts in the county have also reportedly fallen into the high-rate category, above the state average, but have declined the offer of help from the program.
Among the resources the group will use are the results of a survey that is being conducted online.
