$250 million fund available to develop clean energy in New York

Wind, hydroelectric, solar, biomass and other “clean-energy” electric generation projects could qualify for part of a $250 million state development fund.

The money is being made available to a broad range of renewable energy generation projects, according to an announcement from Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office.

The funding, for medium- and large-scale projects, is intended to ensure a growing and cleaner energy supply in New York.

This is a critical component of Cuomo’s Energy Highway Blueprint, aimed at upgrading and modernizing New York’s aging energy infrastructure.

Funding for these renewable projects is administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

The funding will be awarded competitively, with recipients expected to be announced by next summer.

“The generation of electricity from renewable sources increases energy diversity and promotes a better environment for us all,” said state Public Service Commission Chairman Garry Brown. “Developing renewable resources, along with our energy efficiency efforts, provides our best hope toward ending dependency on fossil fuels, improving regional economies, reducing harmful emissions, and enabling all of us to gain greater control of our energy future.”

The statement from Cuomo’s office says that New York has been successful at attracting investments in clean energy and diversifying the in-state resource mix.
