CANTON – Canton Village Police report a 21-year-old SUNY Canton student died from apparent self-inflicted stab wounds Sunday night on Dies Street.

According to sources near the scene, the male was allegedly discovered lying in a driveway on Dies Street, after fleeing a fire that he started in a second-story bedroom at 28 1/2 Dies St. Police declined to identify the man because it was an apparent suicide.

Police said they responded to a call reporting a suicidal man with a knife at that address at 11:40 p.m. Sunday.

When patrols arrived, they found the residence in flames and discovered the man lying on the ground across the street. He had reportedly slit both wrists and stabbed himself in the chest.

New York State Police, St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies, the SUNY Canton Police Department and Canton Fire and Rescue responded to the scene.

The blaze was extinguished and contained to the upstairs bedroom.

An autopsy on the man is scheduled for 5:30 this afternoon.
