POTSDAM -- More than 180 local excavators attended Dig Safely New York's Excavator Safety Seminar recently at SUNY Potsdam.

“Our Excavator Safety Seminars give people the knowledge of best safe digging practices and it reinforces the importance of contacting 811 as the first step,” said Kevin Hopper, executive director for Dig Safely New York. “In 2016 alone, there were 465 gas damages reported to Dig Safely New York’s damage reporting system. That is 465 times first-responders had to respond to a scene and assess a potential threat to our communities. With education and training on the safe digging best practices, we can reduce the number of these reported events.”

Keynote speakers Brad Gardener and his wife Dolores discussed the dangers of not following safety procedures with attendees this year.

Brad lost his arm in a workplace accident involving an auger approximately 10 years ago.

He talked to the audiences about how this tragedy could have been prevented, while his wife will discuss first-hand how the accident has impacted her and their family.

Brad and his wife, Dolores, are world-renowned safety motivational speakers. They have inspired thousands of industrial workers to focus on the importance of safety from a new perspective.

Dig Safely New York hosts a total of nine free excavator safety seminars that take place throughout New York in March. Last year, more than 3,300 professional attended these events.
