St. Lawrence County getting 'fair' share of state road, bridge funding for first time in decade, Sen. Ritchie says

Nearly $180 million in road projects in St. Lawrence, Jefferson and Oswego counties represents the first time in a decade that upstate areas are getting a “fair” amount of state aid, according to state Sen. Patty Ritchie.

Under Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s original plan, paving and bridge reconstruction infrastructure spending was weighted to benefit New York City and downstate counties, the Republican senator from Heuvelton said in a prepared statement.

Ritchie said she and her colleagues fought for “a more balanced plan”—totaling $27.1 billion—that meets “upstate needs as well." The projects are making travel safer and more efficient, as well as help to create jobs and boost the region’s economy, she said.

Included in the statewide plan is over $1 billion in funding over five years for the paving, rehabilitation and maintaining of roadways through the “PAVE NY” program and repairs to local bridges via the “BRIDGE NY” program, which will provide funding for repairs to bridges across the state.

Key projects receiving funding in St. Lawrence County include $11.3 million for Route 11 bridge improvements, $3.35 million for Route 58 improvements and $3.73 million for Route 37 bridge improvements.

A number of the projects were completed last year. Others are taking place this year with some projects scheduled for future years.
