POTSDAM – The death of 12-year-old Garrett Phillips has been listed as a homicide, according to an initial autopsy report announced by Potsdam Village Police Friday.

According to a press release issued by Chief Edward Tischler, his department chose to wait until after Phillips' funeral this morning to make the announcement, out of respect for the boy's family.

Other autopsy information will not be released until the final report is received, the release states.

"Leads and evidence continue to develop and are being addressed," Tischler writes. "The Potsdam Police Department has not listed a suspect or person of interest in this investigation."

Tischler stated that the press will be contacted when new information is available.

The Potsdam Police Department requests that anyone who may have information that might assist in this investigation contact the department at 265-2121.

Garrett was found unconscious Monday afternoon in the apartment he shared with his mother at 100 Market St.

Police had gone to the apartment following a call from a neighbor saying a loud noise and moaning had been heard coming from the apartment.

Taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, the boy died after efforts to revive him failed.

The autopsy was done in Albany and the full results have not yet been made public.
