116th Assembly District candidate Byrne says he wants to repeal SAFE Act, block measures to strengthen existing law

John Byrne, the Republican and Independence Party candidate for the state Assembly’s 116th “River District,” says full repeal of the controversial SAFE Act, and making sure that existing law isn’t strengthened, will be some of his priorities if he is elected.

Byrne, from Cape Vincent, is challenging incumbent Democrat Addie Russell, who voted in favor of the gun control law, for the seat in the state lower legislative house.

“The SAFE Act is a reminder of how corrupt our representatives in Albany can be,” Byrne wrote in a press release. “The bill was introduced and given a ‘message of necessity’ to skirt around the three-day aging process required to allow public input on a law before it’s voted on.

“Assemblywoman Russell still defends her vote in support of the SAFE Act. And she’s gone even further, dismissing a package of gun restrictions some are calling SAFE Act 2. Assemblywoman Addie Russell should stand up for her constituents and denounce the proposed SAFE Act 2,” Byrne wrote.

Byrne said he is determined to “work across the aisle to repeal the SAFE Act if he is elected Nov. 4.

“I want to be very clear with the voters. If I’m elected to the Assembly I will. I served 8 years to protect our freedoms and I would not vote to give them away. I’ll remember that I work for the people of the North Country and will work to prevent ridiculous proposals like SAFE Act 2,” said John Byrne.

He says going door to door and talking with folks in the district, “one of the biggest concerns people have is the full repeal of the S.A.F.E. Act.”

A third line on the ballot for the 116th is taken by Russ Finley, Conservative from Lisbon.

The 116th Assembly District includes Ogdensburg and the St. Lawrence County towns of Canton, DePeyster, Hammond, Lisbon, Louisville, Macomb, Massena, Morristown, Oswegatchie, Potsdam, Rossie and Waddington.
