Updated at 12:33 p.m. to include official joint statement from Massena Central School District and Massena Police Department
MASSENA -- Village police responded to a tip of a possible threat to Massena Central School shortly after 6 a.m. today, but didn't find anything, police said.
Seven patrolmen, three sergeants and a lieutenant were on the scene.
They cleared the school and there were no arrests made. No charges are pending and there is not an ongoing investigation, police said.
Police were acting on information from an anonymous tipster that there may have been a threat to Massena Central School.
There was never any lockdown and there was no interruption to the school day. Despite the threat being discredited, large numbers of parents are signing out their children for the day, school officials said.
On Friday morning, the Massena school district and police department released the following joint statement:
"On November 6, 2014 at about 9:25pm, the Massena Police Department received vague information regarding a student possibly bringing a gun to school today. The information did not identify any specific students, nor did it provide any details regarding a specific person being threatened or in danger.
Police immediately notified Massena Central Schools Interim Superintendent and the school district took steps to notify staff and cooperate fully with the police investigation.
Throughout the night and into the morning, police spoke with a number of people as they tracked down leads and information and throughout their investigation, no credible information was developed.
Because no credible information was uncovered, school was held with a noticeable police presence at the High School and the J.W. Leary Junior High School. Police also increased their routine patrols in the neighborhoods of both schools.
"We were very confident this morning that this was a rumor that grew considerably. Had we felt a credible threat existed, we would have recommended that school officials take a different action," said Timmy J. Currier, Chief of Police.
Massena Central School District administrators and the District Safety Team chairperson worked closely with the Massena Police Department last evening and throughout the early hours before school opened today to determine the best course of action. No decision regarding the utmost safety of our students and staff is made lightly. The decision to open school was made only after the Superintendent and High School administration felt assured that the rumor was unfounded and no credible threat existed. We are extremely grateful for the assistance and investigative expertise provided by the Massena Police Department and the backup support offered by St. Lawrence County Emergency Services."
