At least 2,844 residents signed up for Medicaid in St. Lawrence County since the New York State Health Exchange opened in 2013.

In April, that number was 1,800, but with know open enrollment period for Medicaid residents have continued to sign up for coverage.

The number could be as high as 3,334 as data for zip codes with less than 50 enrollees was not included in data tool released by the New York State Department of Health.

That would bring the number of St. Lawrence County residents who acquired health insurance through the exchange in the first year up to more than 4,500.

The greater Massena area, zip code 13662, had the highest number of Medicaid enrollees with a total of 590 signups. That zip code also includes the town of Louisville.

The Ogdensburg area zip code 13669 was second with 428 Medicaid enrollees. That zip code includes parts of Morristown, Oswegatchie and Lisbon.

Towns with less than 50 signups included Fine, Waddington, Clare, Clifton, Colton, Morristown Russell, Hopkinton, Piercefield and DePeyster.
