DEKALB — A 10-year-old boy has been credited with helping save his family during a fire Friday afternoon on County Route 17.
The fire was reported to DeKalb firefighters around 4:30 p.m., according to Second Assistant Chief Chris Blauvelt.
The child, who lives at the CR 17 home noticed flames on the porch, which then quickly spread to the house, Blauvelt said.
The boy pressed a smoke alarm and verbally alerted his family to get out of the house.
“He’s a good kid,” Blauvelt said. The fire department plans to honor the child for his life saving efforts.
When firefighters arrived on scene the house was totally engulfed in flames and was unable to be saved. The home is considered a total loss.
Two adults and a teenage girl were inside the home at the time of the fire, Blauvelt said.
The cause was determined to be electrical.
Everyone got out safely and no injuries were reported.
The home was reportedly insured.
Canton Fire and Rescue, Heuvelton Fire, Richville Fire and Hermon Fire and Rescue were all on scene.
The family was provided aid from the American Red Cross.
The Red Cross provided financial assistance for necessities such as food and clothing to the family of four.
Volunteers also offered emotional support and comfort kits containing personal care items.
