St. Lawrence University sophomore Willie Zachery led five Saints in double figures on Friday with 21 points, helping his team defeat Rensselaer 73-68 in Troy, NY.
The Saints improved to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in Liberty League play after shooting 48% from the floor and 44% from behind the arc (12-of-27). Zachery was joined in double figures in scoring by Kyle Kobis, Riley Naclerio, captain Brady Condlin and Kyle Edwards, who returned from injury to make his season debut on Friday. Meanwhile, Renssselaer, who finished with a 34-29 edge in rebounds and a 32-18 lead in points in the paint, was led by Chase Almond's double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds).
St. Lawrence climbed out to a nine point lead early in the first half and held on to a 32-29 advantage at intermission. Rensselaer would rally to tie the score at 56-56 with 6:10 left in regulation, only to see the Scarlet and Brown respond with an 8-0 run for a 64-56 edge. Almond got the Engineers within one possession, but Kobis delivered a big three pointer with 1:02 left to push the lead back to six. Zachery's perfect 6-for-6 mark from the free throw line in the final minute would help the visitors earn the opening win of 2015.
Zachery added a game-high five assists, three rebounds and no turnovers while Condlin had a team-best eight rebounds. RPI's Brian Hatcher had 15 points while Nate Kane and Josh Dugas each chipped in 12 points.
St. Lawrence will be out for its fifth consecutive victory on Saturday when the Saints head to Schenectady, NY to take on Union College at 4:00pm.
