Rochester, NY - An offensive explosion by the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team was ended at just the right time for the host of the UofR/Holiday Inn Airport Tournament, as the Yellowjackets finished the final seven-plus minutes on a 19-7 run to defeat the Golden Knights 71-67 in the opening round of the annual tournament.
The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 3-2 overall with the loss, while Rochester inched closer to .500 at 2-3. Clarkson will face Hartwick at 1:00 pm on Sunday afternoon in the consolation game.
The two teams went back and forth for the majority of the contest, with 12 lead changes and five ties throughout. Rochester had the better of it in the early going, changing a one-point deficit into a seven-point lead in the first half with a 10-2 run over the course of five minutes (29-22). The Yellowjackets ended the half with a five-point lead, and increased the advantage to as many as eight points on a handful of occasions in the second half. However, Clarkson quickly changed the momentum with a 13-0 run midway through the second half that was highlighted, and capped off by, a Dylan Hodownes (Honeoye Falls, NY) 3-pointer that gave Clarkson a 60-52 lead with 7:38 remaining. Rochester responded with its own 11-2 run to regain the lead and a Felix Abongo (Beacon, NY) gave the advantage back to Clarkson with less than three minutes to go, but it was the last that the Knights would hold the lead as Rochester was able to hit its free throws down the stretch to maintain its modest advantage.
Marques Charlton (Deer Park, NY) led all scorers with 18 points, going 6-for-11 from the field, shooting 4-for-6 from the perimeter, and Dylan Hodownes added 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting (3-for-6 from beyond the 3-point arc). John Coleman (Potsdam, NY) also chipped in 13 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
For Rochester, Nate Vernon had 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting and Tyler Sankes added 12 points (6-for-11 from the field) and seven rebounds.
