Sept. 15: St. Lawrence University senior Jack Whelan shot rounds of 70 and 74, finishing second overall and helping the Saint men's golf team to a tie for fifth at the Guy Kuhn Invitational hosted by Allegheny College on Monday.
Whelan opened the tournament with his third consecutive under-par round with a two under 70 and was tied for the lead after day one. He shot a two-over 74 on Monday and finished at 144, one stroke behind medalist Jake Reed of St. Vincent College, who shot 70-73 for a 143 total.
The Saints shot best-four-of-five rounds of 311 on each day of the tournament for a 622 total, tied for fifth with Carnegie Mellon and four strokes behind host Allegheny. Washington and Jefferson was the winner in the 12-team field with a 603 total.
Jake Danforth shout rounds of 78 and 79 for a 157 total and tied for 17th as the second Saint scorer while Parker Dennis timed eight strokes off an opening 84 with a 76 on Monday to finish at 160, tied for 27th. Jack Reardon combined rounds of 80 and 82 for a 162 total and was tied for 34th while Brady Garrett shot back-to-back 83s for a 166 total and was tied for 50th.
The Saints will play at the Williams Invitational on Sept. 20-21 om their next outing.
