Whelan 2nd, Saints men's golf team 5th at Williams Tourney

Jack Whelan finished second as an individual, one shot off the lead and St. Lawrence University's men's golf team was fifth at the 2014 Williams College Invitational on the 6808 yard, par 71 Taconic Golf Course on Sunday.

The final standings gave coaches a sneak peak at what the competition in next weekend's Liberty League Championships at Rochester may look like as RPI won the team title with a 598 total, Skidmore and host Williams tied for second at 600, and the Saints were 10 strokes off RPI's lead and eight behind Skidmore with their 608.

Whelan continued his outstanding fall season on day one and helped the Saints to a team best-four-of-five score of 299 with an even par 71 It was Whelan's fourth par or better round among six to start the season. Williams led the 19-team field with a 297 with the Saints second, two strokes back, after the opening round of play.

Whelan shot a four-over 75 on Sunday and finished at 146, one shot off the lead of James Jackson of RPI who shot 70-75 for a 145 total and led the Engineers' charge up the leaderboard. RPI jumped three spots and Skidmore six on Sunday.

Jack Reardon shot back-to-back rounds of 76 and finished tied for 18th at 152 while Parker Dennis shot bookend 77s and was tied for 30th at 154. Brady Garrett shot 75 on Satudray, but slipped to an 83 on Sunday and was tied for 45th while Jack Danforth shot 83-80 for 163 and was tied for 61st.

The Liberty League tournament will be held in Rochester next weekend.
