Whelan 2nd, Saints 4th as a Team at Palomountain Invitational

Freshman Jack Whelan shot a three-under-par total of 141 to finish second overall and St. Lawrence University's men's golf team posted its best team score in thrt 81-75ee seasons with a 601 total, good for fourth place as the Palomountain Invitational concluded at the Saratoga Spa Golf Course on Sunday.

Whelan, who posted his second straight second place finish, shot rounds of 70 and 71, trailing medalist John McCarthy of host Skidmore by a stroke. One of three players to break par for both rounds on the 6900 par 72 Saratoga Spa course, Whelan trailed McCarthy by one after Saturday's first round and both carded 71s on Sunday.

The Saints shot 302 in the first round and 299 in the second to finish with a 601 total. The 299 second round score was the best since the Oswego tournament in the spring of 2010 and the 601 total is the best since 2009. Skidmore won the tournament with a 586 total with Salem State second at 587 and Bentley third at 597. A total of 11 teams played in the tournament.

Freshman Jack Reardon was second for the Saints with a 75-77-152 total for a tie for 16th while senior Adrian Bouthot shot 78-76-154 and tied for 20th. Brandon Lustig shot 79-77 for a 156 total to tie for 24th and freshman Mike Phelan shot 81-75 for 156 to also tie for 245h. Phelan's 75 on Sunday was the second best round for the Saints, who had all five scores under 80,

The Saints will conclude the spring season at the Nazareth Invitational on April 28-29.
