Whelan 2nd in men's golf playoff, Saints 3rd as team at NYU Invitational

St. Lawrence University sophomore Jack Whelan was the only player to have a sub-ar ru0ound at the 6700 yard par-71 Forest Hills Field Club in Bloomfield, NJ on Sunday, but had to settle for second after a three-hole playoff with Rochester's Nick Palladino for the individual title at the 2013 NYU Invitational.

Whelan shot an opening round of 77, but came back with a second round 69 to finish tied with Palladino at 146. The two played even until Palladino won on the third hole of the playoff.

Rochester won the team title with a team total of 616 with NYU second at 636, SLU third at 639 and Hamilton fourth at 654 in a six-team field.

Graham Niles was the second Saint finisher in the tournament, shooting 77-82 for a 159 total for eighth overall with Jeff Duggan finishing tied for 12th at 168 with identical rounds of 83. Brandon Lustig was tied for 17th at 168 with back-to-back 84s and Jack Reardon finished 29th with round of 86 and 93 for 179 total. Chris Mudge, playing as an individual, shot 85-84-169, tied for 19th.

The Saints will return to action at the Fred Kravitz Invitational at Rochester next weekend.
