It was déjà vu all over again for St. Lawrence University's men's hockey team as the Saints skated to a 3-3 tie for the second night in a row on its ECAC Hockey season-opening road trip with Brown coming from behind to gain the point for a tie.

Not only did the Saints tie for the second straight night after Friday's draw at Yale, they tied 3-3 for the second straight year at Brown, which has now assured itself of at least one point in the season series between the two teams for the 21st consecutive year, by far the most of any SLU ECAC opponent. SLU is now 4-2-2 on the season and 0-0-2 in league while Brown is 2-1-1 and 0-1-1 after a loss and a tie on opening weekend.

Senior goalie Matt Weninger delivered the tie for the Saints, making 33 saves including two spectacular stops on Brown sophomore wing Nick Lappin, son of former Saint All America Pete Lappin, who had the game on his stick at least twice only to see Weninger rob him with big saves. The first came on a five on three power play late in the second period as Weninger got back across and put a blocker on a shot into what seemed like a wide open net to stuff Lappin. Officials later reviewed the play, but ruled no goal. Weninger also stopped a Lappin rush in the third period, a period the Saints dominated, but couldn't come away with the go-ahead goal.

Weninger's play and that of Greg Carey, helped ease a little bit of the discomfort of Saint head coach Greg Carvel, who was hit in the head by a errant puck in the first period, but returned to the bench with a bandage and an icebag after stitches.

Brown opened the scoring 7:14 into play as defenseman Matt Wahl snapped a shot past a screened Weninger just seconds after a successful Saint penalty kill. Wahl's first of the year came at 7:14, but Brown's lead only lasted 2:11 as the Saints recovered with a power play goal of their own.

Freshman Gavin Bayreuther brought the Saints even with his third of the year, snapping a shot from the center point which beat Brown freshman goalie Tyler Steel at 9:25 with Justin Baker and Greg Carey assisting.

The Bears went back in front at 14:35 of the first, again just after the end of a power play as Garnet Hathaway collected a loose puck in the slot in a tangle of players and flipped it into the upper corner for his second of the year, but the Saints again had a power play answer. Greg Carey scored his second of the weekend and fourth of the year with a wrister under the crossbar from Matt Carey and Bayreuther to tie it at 2-2 at 16:48 and then Carey picked up his third point of the night when he got the initial shot off in a flurry which finally ended up with Matt Carey's team-leading fifth of the season on a second rebound at 19:12.

While Brown was denied on a five-on-three power play late in the second period, the Bears were able to get the equalizer at 18:38 when defenseman Dennis Robertson scored his first of the year from Matt Lorito on the power play to make it 3-3 after two periods.

The Saints outshot Brown 14-3 in the third period, but Steel prevented further scoring in the Brown defensive end and Weninger came up with the saves he needed to keep it deadlocked despite a lack of activity in terms of shots on goal. Weninger also had the only two saves in overtime, although the extra period was fairly evenly split territorially.

The Saints will continue their ECAC season opening road trip with games at Harvard and Dartmouth next weekend.
