Brooke Webster scored her first career hat trick, with all three goals coming off assists from linemates Kennedy Marchment and Hannah Miller, to lead the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 5-0 win over ninth-ranked Northeastern in both teams' season opener on Friday night at Matthews Arena in Boston.

"We got off to a great start and gave everyone some much needed confidence," said head coach Chris Wells '92. "We were a bit snakebitten (in our exhibition game with McGill) last week and this week those same chances went in."

Webster got the Saints on the board early, picking up a loose puck in front of the net and firing a low shot to the right side at the 2:14 mark to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. She scored again five minutes later, putting a backhand shot over Northeastern goaltender Brittany Bugalski's shoulder to give St. Lawrence a 3-0 lead.

She scored her third goal of the game halfway through the second period, as Kennedy Marchment sent a pass from the left circle across the net to the right side, and Webster sent a shot high into the short side to give the Saints a 4-0 lead.

Jenna Marks '16 was the last St. Lawrence player to record a hat trick; she scored three goals in a 4-1 win over Dartmouth on Feb 14, 2014.

First-year Kalie Grant scored her first career goal in the first period, as Maggie McLaughlin found Nadine Edney on the left side of the crease, and Edney tapped it across the face of the net to Grant, who put the puck away for the Saints' second goal of the game.

Justine Reyes capped the scoring in the third period, taking a pass from behind the net and putting it in the top shelf to give the Saints a 5-0 lead.

Grace Harrison recorded 25 saves to earn the shutout for the Saints, while Bugalski made 30 saves for Northeastern.

The Saints (1-0) held a 35-25 advantage in shots on goal. Northeastern (0-1) was 0-for-5 on the power play, while the Saints were 0-for-6.

The teams will meet at Matthews Arena again on Saturday at 3 p.m.
