Walberger and Gariepy score first collegiate goals as Roos men's lax cruise past Badgers, 24-6

Canton, NY – Nick Walberger and Mike Gariepy both scored their first collegiate goals as the SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team cruised to a 24-6 victory v. Johnson State College on Sunday afternoon.

The Roos (6-2), winners of six of their last seven, opened the contest scoring 12 straight goals, including five off the stick of Josh Yelvington. The Badgers (0-3) got on the board on Kyle Picard's second goal of the season with 2:40 remaining in the opening half as Canton led 12-1 at intermission.

SUNY Canton scored eight straight out of halftime to extend its lead to 20-1 and Johnson State held even with the Roos in the final quarter, 5-5, as the Roos emptied their bench.

Yelvington (5-0-5), Kyle Smith (1-4-5) and Garrett (4-1-5) led the Roos with five points each, while Sonny White chipped in a career-best four points on three goals and an assist. Trenton Yule (1-2-3), Dante Coco (2-1-3), Jake Sutton (2-1-3) and Brad Sandroni (2-1-3) all added three points apiece for the hosts.

Brandon Rodee recorded a team-high eight ground balls, while Garrett Fields tallied a team-best three caused turnovers. Walberger and Gariepy posted their first career goals, while Josh Monplaisir posted his first collegiate points with a pair of assists.

Kody Kocsis posted a perfect save percentage stopping the only shot he faced to give the Roos a 5-0 lead after the first quarter. Justin LaDuke stopped two shots in the second quarter, Brennan Bueno made one save in the third quarter and Dan Hartstock stopped two shots in the fourth quarter. Patrick Bell turned aside 10 shots for Johnson State.

The men's lacrosse team is back in action on Wednesday when it visits Castleton at 4 p.m.
